About & calculation method

Qibla Direction UK shows prayer times for towns and cities across the United Kingdom. Times are calculated astronomically from each city's coordinates; nothing is copied from mosque timetables.

Default method

Muslim World League: Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, Isha at 17°. It is widely followed in the UK and is the cautious choice at both ends of the night (earliest Fajr, latest Isha).

Summer nights in the UK

From roughly May to August the sun never sinks 18° below the horizon in much of the UK, so Fajr and Isha can't be calculated directly. We use the twilight-angle rule (a portion of the night proportional to the angle). This is why mosque timetables differ most in summer – some use fixed times, others use the Moonsighting Committee method or a unified city timetable.

Asr

We show both: the standard (Shafi, Maliki, Hanbali) time when an object's shadow equals its length, and the Hanafi time when the shadow is twice its length. Most South Asian mosques in the UK follow the Hanafi time.

Other methods

You can switch to the Moonsighting Committee, ISNA (15°) or 14° method on any page (14° gives a later Fajr – for example it matches the Fajr start times published by Birmingham Central Mosque); your choice is remembered in your browser.

Always follow your local mosque for congregational (jamaat) times.
